Intendo is now a household name; the company is responsible for some of gaming’s most enduring icons, yet even they can’t match Super Mario’s popularity. Over the years, Mario has become Nintendo’s flagship character, and he has helped popularize genres as diverse as golf, board games, and kart racing.
It’s not often that a franchise can so fluidly switch between 2D and 3D adventures, but Super Mario has proven itself to be an exception with its platforming series’ successful transfer into 3D. But there are many who think Mario’s 2D sidescroller roots are a ceiling he can’t break.
10/10 Super Mario All-Stars: 25th Anniversary Edition Just Plays The Hits (Score: 70)
Super Mario All-Stars for the Nintendo 64 One of the more amazing compilation releases for the 16-bit console is Super Nintendo, which gathers four iconic early entries in the Super Mario series. Nintendo has honored milestone anniversaries for its most important franchises in a variety of ways, with Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES being re-released on the Wii.
The 25th Anniversary Edition does not receive a higher rating because it is the most basic of compilation re-releases, emulating only the original title. It doesn’t provide anything new, but it does allow Wii gamers the opportunity to play four NES oldies.
9/10 Super Mario Bros. 35 Turns Classic Mario Into A Battle Royale Brawl (Score: 75)
Super Mario Bros. 35 is a creative take on the original Super Mario Bros. and the battle royale phenomena popularized by puzzle games such as Tetris 99. This chaotic adventure pits 35 internet players against each other in battle royale scenarios created in various Super Mario Bros. locations.
It’s a charming variation on a classic that’s infinitely replayable, but the game was only accessible for a six-month period. Super Mario Bros. 35 was launched to commemorate the series’ 35th anniversary, however fans will be disappointed that this tribute will not be available indefinitely.
8/10 New Super Mario Bros. 2 Celebrates Coin Excess (Score: 78)
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the third installment in the modern Mario sub-series and the sequel to the original Nintendo DS game. The Nintendo 3DS sequel is heavily inspired by Super Mario Bros. 3 and prioritizes coin gathering, with a grand total of one million serving as the ultimate aim.
This pivot results in the introduction of the Gold Flower and other new mechanisms that aren’t as fascinating as the original game’s new heights. It’s a passable 2D mario games, but it falls short of its lauded predecessor.
7/10 Super Mario Advance Improves Upon A NES Classic (Score: 84)
The Game Boy Advance handheld was a game changer for Nintendo, not only in terms of fresh IPs, but also handheld versions of NES and Super Nintendo classics.
The Super Mario Advance series encompassed the entire range of old Mario titles, with the first installment remaking Super Mario Bros. 2, but also including Mario Bros. for good measure (as well as the at-the-time luxury of four-player linked play). The original Super Mario Bros. 2 is a classic, but Super Mario Advance’s enhancements, such as hidden Yoshi Eggs and redesigned boss bouts, are all true improvements.
6/10 New Super Mario Bros. U Returns To Four-Player Mushroom Kingdom Chaos (Score: 84)
The Wii U remains a contentious entry in Nintendo’s system lineup, with sales falling short of those of the Wii and Switch. New Super Mario Bros. U was published as a Wii U launch title and is an outstanding demonstration of what the machine is capable of.
Four-player anarchy has never been more exciting in a New Super Mario Bros. game, but at this point in the series, the same level concepts start to get old. New transformations, such as the Flying Squirrel power-up, are entertaining but ultimately unnecessary. The game was later transferred to the Nintendo Switch as New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, its final form.
5/10 New Super Mario Bros. Wii Turns 2D Sidescrolling Into A Four-Person Experience (Score: 87)

The second title in the 2D New Super Mario Bros. series receives a significant improvement as it transitions from the Nintendo DS to the Wii. The Wii outperforms the DS in many ways, but the best feature of New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the ability to play four-player sidescrolling chaos, which was unattainable on its predecessor.
The new power-ups, such as the Propeller Mushroom and Penguin Suit, aren’t game-changers, but the whole experience is a passionate, fun celebration of Nintendo’s legendary platforming franchise.
4/10 New Super Mario Bros. Brings Mario Back To His 2D Sidescrolling Roots (Score: 89)
The first 2D sidescroller Mario title in in 14 years, New Super Mario Bros. For the Nintendo DS, opened Nintendo’s eyes to the reality that this classic gameplay is still very much in demand. New Super Mario Bros. would become a popular alternative series to the mainline 3D Mario games, spanning both handheld and home console platforms.
The original New Super Mario Bros. experience is difficult to top, and the Mega Mushroom. Which transforms the recipient into a Kaiju-sized force of destruction, is one of the most satisfying modern Mario power-ups.
3/10 Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3 Upgrades A Beloved Super Nintendo Hit (Score: 91)

The original Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island for the Super Nintendo is a 2D platforming marvel that manages to outperform its predecessor. Super Mario Advance 3 focuses on Yoshi’s Island, faithfully porting the SNES success to the handheld GBA.
This title, like the other Super Mario Advance remake ports, delivers amazing graphical. And acoustic advancements while also maintaining larger consistency within the Yoshi’s Island franchise. Super Mario Advance 3 adds six new levels to the game, none of which are insignificant, and the limited use of four-player connected play returns.
2/10 Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 Is A Portable Version Of SNES Launch Title (Score: 92)

Instead of replicating its NES predecessors chronologically, Super Mario Advance 2 decided to plunge immediately into an enhanced portable port of the SNES’ Super Mario World. The original Super Mario World is simply too enjoyable to ignore. And having a genuine portable version of it in 2002 was a massive thing.
It misses some of the amenities seen in other Super Mario Advance titles, but its ability to stand out as a pretty bare-bones port speaks to Super Mario World’s greatness.

With a pretty high score, Super Mario Advance 4 is one of the most loved mario games.
The fourth and last Super Mario Advance chapter concentrates on Super Mario Bros. 3, a title considered a landmark in the platformer genre on the NES. Super Mario Advance 4 adds several significant changes to Super Mario Bros. 3, yet they all feel like natural extensions of the original experience.
Nintendo has long embraced incorporating innovative peripherals into their gaming experiences. And Super Mario Advance 4 extensively uses the Game Boy Advance’s e-Reader and accompanying e-Cards,. Which can be used to unlock entire new worlds as well as additional power-ups, such as Boomerang Mario.
